Everest Base Camp Trekking- the dream destination for trekkers! Around 50,000 trekkers from different countries of the world take a part to trek to Everest region each year. It’s a as dangerous as popular trekking trail. Everest Base Camp Trekking demands a level of determination, patience and strength that is not easy for everyone. But don’t worry! With proper preparation and planning, even first time hikers or travellers can successfully to reach on the base of the Everest.

Altitude sickness is occurs when you trek to a high elevation too fast or quickly. When you ascend, the oxygen levels also decrease and can’t adjust to your body. If you trek upward too quickly, similarly, your body can’t hope with these lower oxygen level and you can feel the symptoms of as headache, dizziness and shortness of breath and nausea. It can be happen to anyone the elevation of above 2,000 metr, and is not necessary relate to fit or unfit of personalities.

 

10 Things to Know Before Everest Base Camp Trekking

1. Way To Reach at Starting Point

There are many way to reach at Everest Region. However, most of the traveller follow the following way:-

Way 1:  Kathmandu to Lukla by flight

It takes 45  minutes to  reach at Tenzin Hilary airport at Lukla. Flight will cost $ 360 per person for round ticket. Sometimes flight will be cancelled or postponed due to weather and visibility. In case your flight plan might be change then schedule. So, carry enough money in your pocket and extendable date too.

Way 2: Jeep to Salleri

It takes 10 hour to rech at Salleri from Kathmandu. Fair for jeep charge 20$ per person.  In this way you don’t need to book flight however you need to extend 3 days extra to trip to followi this way. You need 3 days to reach Lukla from Salleri.

Way 3: Jiri by Bus

Third method is very lengthy. If you have enough time to trek in Nepal. This is perfect way to trek to Everest Region. Most of the trekkers follow this way before Lukla airport was built. Bus fare charge 10$ per person and take 8 hours to reach at Jiri from Kathmandu. On other hand  you need another 6 day to hike for reaching at Lukla.

2. Best Season To Trek in Everest Base Camp

The best season to trek in Everest Base Camp is ‘high season’ between October to November and March to May. These are the golden time period in the year where visibility and weather is clearest, there is a certain percent chance of rain, and it’s perfect enviroment in the mountains.

October to November is the most crowded season for FIT trekkers, but May is the most of the Everest ascents take place. Trekking to EBC leaving these months means too much snow, rain and cold.

3. Permit Required for Everest Base Camp Trekking

You have to buy Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Khumbu Pasang Municipality Trekking permit while trekking in Everest Base Camp Trekking.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit which cost nearly 35 $ per person.This permit can be buy in Kathmandu, Lukla or Monjo.

Khumbu Pasang Municipality Trekking Permit which is getting at Namche Bazar gateway of Everest Base Camp. This permit Cost $20 per person. This permit is unavailable in Kathmandu.

4. Packking List Before Starting Trekking

Trekking in Everest Base Camp is neither a cup of a for everyone. Before doing Everst Base Camp Trekking you must have prepare with some trekking gear and few things. Packking the following list items before starting trekking:

  • Heavy Jacket with lightweight
  • Thermal shirt and pants for trekking
  • Warm trekking socks
  • Headband and Hat
  • Pair of gloves
  • Proper hiking boots
  • Medicine
  • Lightweight trekking pole
  • Toilet Paper
  • Toilet Paper
  • Water purification tablets

5. Preparing Medicines For Bring to EBC

Before you are moving towards the Everest there are insufficient of medical in the upper parts. So, you mentally prepare to carry medicine while moving ahead. Below we mention all required medicine as per doctors prescription as general:

  • Rehydration salts
  • Vitamin C
  • Water bottle(reuseable)
  • Ibuprofen (Altitude related headaches)
  • Cough Drop
  • Water Purification Tablet
  • Diamox for altitude sickkness (Specially Consulting with Doctor)

6. Method to Prevent Altitude Sickness

If altitude sickness symptoms are felling on you stop ascending and take a day rest, or descend to a near village at lower altitude. EBC will always be there – it’s ok to take it slow so you’re healthy when you get there!

Mostly you will well hydrate. We would like to advise you that stay far from alcohol and caffeine. Remember that you have to full with high carbohydrate and proteinable foods.There are mostly famous rule for hiker “Hike high sleep low”. The slogan means hike high altitude and stay at low altitude it make your body active to adjust in different enviroments.

7. Travel Insurance Information for EBC Trekking

Travel insurance is mostly require before travel or trekking. Everest lies in the high altitude so it’s danger too. You need travel insurance for your safety and secureness. ESPECIALLY in the mountains. It’s important to check if your current insurance will cover up to 5550m altitude. Many insurance Agency or providers will have an elevation limit that’s below 5000m. You’ll likely need to supplement your previous coverage!

We bought insurance online in a cheap cost, which covers medical evacuations for any elevation level. World Nomad for example, allows you to purchase insurance abroad and covers you for medical evacuations at high elevation.

8. ATM Locations in EBC Trekking

The only ATMs along this EBC trekking are in Namche Bazaar. We inform that there are some in Lukla as well. However, when you are there and asking around, locals were saying there is only a bank for local account holders.

ATMs in Namche are temperamental and are often out of service due to power outages or simply running out of cash. The ATMs also charge 500 rupees ($5) per withdrawal and have a max withdrawal of 10,000 rupees ($100). Bottom line and something to know before hiking Everest Base Camp – It’s best to bring all the money you plan on spending from Kathmandu!!

9. Food, Accomodation and Wifi in Everest Base Camp Trekking

Dal Bhat, a staple Nepali dinner with refills included of rice and curry. A nice breakfast of hash browns and vegetables or egg. The cost of water and food increases monumentally as you reach high altitude on this trek.

A bottle of water cost 1$ in Lukla and 4$ at Gorakshep.

Accomodation in the Everest Region is mostly teahouse and lodge. However you have chance to stay and take a coffee in the high altitude hotel at Hotel Everest View. There are not proper cost of accomodation it depends service of lodge and teahouse. Normally accomodation cost 20-30 $ per person according to service.

Free WiFi is rarely available in the Everest Region. The towns of Namche and Lukla have popular restaurants and lodges with WiFi. However, they may charge $1-$2 per device.

If you buy a data SIM card in Kathmandu. Namche have 4G network service, and in Tengboche, occasionally 3G. We offer to buy data sim card and use in your trekking period. It nearly cost of 10-15$.

10. Don't Miss Everest View Point

Kala Patthar

Two hours before when the sun is near to rise, start hiking towards the Kala Patthar. It’s most important to be at once the top of Kala Patthar before the sun rise. Because it comes up behind Mount Everest and will blink with you from the great views. Not only this is a stunning viewpoint for Everest, it provides you a 360-degree panaromic view of the entire mountain region.
